This is a demanding links course, and an ever-present wind will make for a tough examination of your golfing skills. The “Iceman “Henrik Stenson out-dueled Phil Mickelson in an epic battle at the 145th Open Championship in 2016 which was viewed by many as the finest head to head battle on a finals day play since the Dual in the Sun in 1977 at Turnberry featuring Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson. Host to 152nd Open in 2024 we’re sure a new champion will etch more rich memories into the fine history of this special course.

SATURDAY, JUNE 28: ST ANDREWS, SCOTLAND

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club first met here in the spiritual home of golf in 1754, though golf was first played here as early as the 15th century.

St Andrews University, founded in 1410, dominates the center of town. The elegant, ivy-clad buildings and delightful quadrangles and gardens have seen a procession of famous graduates such as Prince William. One of the top universities in Britain, St Andrews is often compared to Oxford and Cambridge for its defining presence and the collegiate feel it gives to the town. The Medieval center of St Andrews consists of a series of narrow alleys and cobbled streets packed with shops, restaurants, and cafés.

On arrival in St.Andrews, we enjoy lunch before check in. This afternoon an optional walking and orientation tour will be available to all guests.

OVERNIGHT: Old Course Hotel – Champions Room

SUNDAY, JUNE 29 CARNOUSTIE, SCOTLAND

GOLF: Today we play Carnoustie. The club has been in The Open Rota since 1931, hosting the event 8 times, most recently the 146th in 2018 won by Francesco Molinari. It is regarded as the most difficult course the game's greats face in golf's oldest championship hence the nickname “Carnastie!”. While the links is relatively flat it is exposed to the elements. A combination of length and accuracy are required as golfers face narrow corridors from the tee. Approach shots demand precision to the greens heavily guarded by steep bunkers and burns. Arguably the toughest finishing holes in championship golf, errant shots are severely penalized as Jean Van de Velde found to his cost in 1999.

SIGHTSEEING: Non-Golfers will enjoy a visit to Glamis Castle, childhood home of Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, and birthplace of Princess Margaret. The family home of the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne, it has been a Royal residence since 1372 and is the legendary setting of Shakespeare's play Macbeth.

OVERNIGHT: Old Course Hotel – Champions Room

MONDAY, JUNE 30: ST ANDREWS, SCOTLAND

GOLF: Today it’s our absolute privilege to walk in the footsteps of giants and play the most famous golf course in the World – The Home of Golf, Old Course, St Andrews. Most recently the host of the 150th Open in 2022, In modern times the “Old Lady” has become less of a challenge to the world’s best but if you don’t listen to your caddie closely some of the most famous bunkers in the world will be ready to capture errant tee and approach shots! Can you repeat Tiger Woods heroics from 2000 when he avoided a bunker? He did it for all 4 days whilst romping to 8 shot victory with a then record score of 19 under par! We all dream about making that famous walk over the Swilken Bridge (stopping for the obligatory photo) across Granny Clarks Wynd and up onto the 18th green, what a way to finish our tour!

SIGHTSEEING: The seaside villages of Fife are some of the prettiest in Scotland. Beautiful beaches, historic harbors and ruined castles make for a charming coastal kingdom. and today we will embark on a tour of some of them.

We start our day in the ancient village of Pittenweem, which remains the busiest of the East Neuk fishing ports. Each morning the fish market bustles in the sheds of the harbour with a handful of local inns offering refreshment once the catch of the day has been sold.

Moving onto Anstruther, considered the capital of the East Neuk of Fife, a busy seaside settlement divided in two by the Dreel Burn, itself a source of fish for centuries.

The village of Crail lies 10 miles along the coastline from Anstruther. A walk along the coastal path passes the Caves of Caiplie. Cut by the sea, the series of caves was once a site of early Christian worship for monks and pilgrims. Crail is the furthest north of the East Neuk villages and was a major port from the 13th and 14th Centuries.

This evening attend our Farewell Party & Dinner in the iconic Old Course Hotel, St Andrews.

OVERNIGHT: Old Course Hotel – Champions Room

TUESDAY, JULY 1 - DEPART

After breakfast transfer to Edinburgh Airport for homeward flights.

Golf Schedule

Royal Birkdale image

A course that provides a formidable test of links golf and fully deserves its recognition as a true venue for The Open since joining the rota in 1954. Each hole runs in valleys between towering sandhills. The problems are clearly stated, if you stray from the fairway the buckthorn and scrub can be demanding. Arnold Palmer won the championship here in 1961 which was a significant step toward attracting top American pros to participate. Tom Watson won the Claret Jug here in 1983.  Jordan Spieth won in 2017.

Royal Liverpool image

Royal Liverpool, built in 1869, on what was then the racecourse of the Liverpool Hunt Club, Hoylake is one of the oldest English seaside courses and among the toughest and most demanding of the great seaside championship links of Britain. Hoylake, as it is more commonly known, lies at the very heart of the history and development of golf in Britain. It also features the longest Par 5 (#18) on the Open Rota at 616 yards. It most recently held the 151st Open in 2023 which was won by American left-hander Brian Harman.

Trump Turnberry - Ailsa Course image

You can’t rush perfection, Turnberry’s Ailsa Course is proof.  It was established in 1902, modified in 1906, modified again in 1909, redesigned in 1938 then nearly disappeared after the Second World War when it was converted into an airbase with several holes flattened into concrete runways. It was restored and reopened in 1951 as one of Scotland’s finest links to the extent it hosted The Open for the first time in 1977 when Tom Watson’s 65-65 weekend beat Jack Nicklaus’ 65-66.  MacKenzie & Ebert made extensive alterations before The Open in 2009 then Ebert returned for a major update in 2015.  The result is spectacular, particularly but by no means limited to holes 9-11 that play across and along the bay atop rock outcrops on the left; dunes, pot bunkers and high fescue on the right.  The club’s famous lighthouse includes an incredible two-bedroom suite and one of the most memorable halfway houses in golf.

Click here for the golf course IMAGE GALLERY

Royal Troon image

Royal Troon is a course in the current Open rota.  Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and Tom Weiskopf (his only win in a major) have won here as did Henrik Stenson whose Sunday round of 63 outlasted Phil Mickelson’s 65 to claim The 145th Open.  A long links that is consistently praised for its testing but fair set up. Troon boasts the shortest hole among Open venues, being the “Postage Stamp” 8th at 126 yards.  The layout gives you a chance to find your game with a gentle opening but the inward nine is considered one of the most difficult sides in major championship golf.

Carnoustie image

The first record of golf played on this links land dates to 1527.  In 1842, a 10-hole course was designed by Alan Robertson followed by an 18-hole course by Old Tom Morris in 1857.  James Braid extended the layout in 1926 which is essentially the links found today. While it is relatively flat, Carnoustie is exposed to the elements. A combination of length and accuracy are required as golfers face narrow corridors from the tee while approach shots demand precision to greens heavily guarded by steep bunkers and burns. Arguably the toughest finishing holes in championship golf are found here highlighted by the par-4, 476 yard 14th and the 245 yard par-3 16th. Ben Hogan won The 82nd Open at Carnoustie in 1953. Tom Watson and Gary Player also hoisted the Claret Jug here as has Padraig Harrington and most recently Francesco Molinari in 2018.

St Andrews - Old Course image

This is the ''Home of Golf''. The Old Course has played host to the greatest golfers and produced many of golf's most dramatic moments. Wide double fairways, seven extensive double greens, and a multitude of intimidating bunkers are just some of the unique features you will encounter. Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods each hoisted the Claret Jug here on two occasions. In 1927, Bobby Jones claimed The 62nd Open six years after taking four strokes to escape the Hill Bunker at the 11th and tearing up his scorecard!  No. 17, the “Road Hole”, is always an adventure as is negotiating the Valley of Sin at the short par-4 18th.

Important Information

Golf Handicap Limit: The golf courses we play around the world offer varying challenges. Players often require to be of a certain standard to properly and fully experience them in the company of likeminded fellow golfers. We therefore set a maximum permitted golf handicap to participate on our tours and cruises; The maximums are 28 for men and 36 for ladies.

Golf Courses: The included list may be subject to change in the event of any club accepting any conflicting national or international event, or for any other reason. Should such a situation occur, PerryGolf will endeavour to book a course of comparable standard, and all booked guests would be notified of the change and replacement venue at the earliest opportunity.
